She’s producing, she’s writing, and she’s going hard… She is HOLDN!
This Jersey local has been on the rise, showing off her unique sound all over the tristate area, mixing alternative beats with some sweet vocals. I’ve had both singles “Burn” and “Fine” on repeat for the past month and was lucky enough to get the scoop on how HOLDN became what she is.
Kristi: Where does your inspiration come from when you’re getting creative?
HOLDN: “Musically, Destiny’s Child and Aaliyah. If you listen closely to some of my music, you can hear that late 90’s/early 2000’s melodic sting sound, integrated with a hip-hop/r&b leaning groove. The rest, I pull from the emotional characteristics of the song. Whatever I’m writing about lyrically, I do my best to translate that into sound. “
Kristi: How did you become “HOLDN”
HOLDN: “My stage/musical persona were so much more extroverted than my actual personality. I decided to go by a stage name, giving that whole other personality a name. HOLDN is derived from the main character of JD Salinger’s “Catcher in the Rye.”
Kristi: Do you write your own music?I do! Usually, I have an idea for a song, then I’ll bring it to a producer I feel will help me bring it to life and tech its full potential. Recently, I’ve loved writing with another creative in the room. I don’t really like having too many people in the room when I work because it’s such a personal experience for me.

“Imagine bringing your friends to your Monday afternoon appointment with you therapist? I couldn’t. Thats what I relate having a studio full of people to.”
Kristi: How did you learn to produce?
HOLDN: “I taught myself. I started out using audacity when that was all I had. I had no sound samples or microphones or interfaces or anything. I would use the mic built into my laptop and make my own sounds from the things I could find around the house. I think that gave me a bit of a different approach when I started producing out of logic. I love using different sounds to replicate your typical hi hat, kick, and snare.”
Kristi: Do you prefer writing or producing?
HOLDN: “Definitely writing. I love producing and I get to be creative through that as well, but there is no better feeling than when you finish writing a song and get that final product back.”
Kristi: What’s your ultimate goal right now?
HOLDN: “Right now I’m working pretty hard behind the curtain to bring some songs I’ve been sitting on for a while back to life. Releasing music is so much more than just setting a date. I want to make sure everything is exactly how I want it to be before it reaches your eyes and ears.”
Kristi: Are you currently working on anything?
HOLDN “I’m always working on everything. There are a lot of moving pieces right now and I can’t wait to bring them together and share them with you!”
